Understanding Turmeric Supplement Formulations
Turmeric supplements are available as powders, extracts and multi-ingredient formulations. The front of a pack does not always provide enough information to compare them accurately.
Read the ingredient list
Check whether the product contains turmeric root powder, turmeric extract or both. If an extract is standardised, the label or supporting specification should explain what it is standardised to.
Check the daily serving
Compare products using the amount provided by the recommended daily serving, not simply the largest number on the front of the pack. Also check the number of servings in the container.
Additional ingredients
Some formulations include ingredients such as ginger, black pepper extract or a fat source. Their presence should not be taken as proof of a particular health result. The full ingredient list and quantities should be stated clearly.
Avoid medicinal claims
Food supplements must not be presented as treating, preventing or curing inflammation, arthritis, pain or another disease or medical condition. General or specific health claims used in marketing must comply with the applicable Great Britain nutrition and health claims rules.
Use the product as labelled
Follow the serving directions and warnings. Do not exceed the recommended daily intake. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
