Magnesium: Food Sources and Authorised Nutrition Claims
Magnesium is an essential mineral found in foods including leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes and wholegrains.
Authorised magnesium claims
Where a food or supplement contains enough magnesium to meet the applicable conditions of use, authorised claims include:
- Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function.
- Magnesium contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system.
- Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function.
- Magnesium contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism.
- Magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
These are maintenance-of-normal-function claims. They do not mean that a magnesium supplement treats sleep problems, anxiety, migraines, cramps or any medical condition.
Check the amount
Read the label for the amount of elemental magnesium per daily serving and its percentage Nutrient Reference Value (NRV). Different magnesium compounds can provide different amounts of elemental magnesium.
Using supplements
Follow the serving directions and warnings on the product label. Do not exceed the recommended daily intake. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
